When using an image from the Internet, please remember to . . .

  • cite the source where you got the image
  • click on thumbnail versions of the picture until you reach a full-size image.  This gives you a better quality picture when you print it out.

Commons.wikimedia.org - "a database of images, music, and videos that's available for educational purposes, as long as you attribute their source.  To find out the owner of an image or its licensing agreement, just click on the pictures.  (As Wikimedia sensibly reminds us, visitors are ultimately responsible for verifying the ownership of any of the materials they use.)" (Adam, Anna, and Helen Mowers. "Start Your Search Engines, Part Two." School Library Journal May (2008): 58-60)

Encyclopedia of Life - "Although this fledgling site wasn't created for the expressed purpose of searching for images, it's a rich source of information on a mind-boggling number of creatures.  If you'd like to use one of its photos or drawings, click on the green information button (on each image's bottom, left-hand corner) and you'll find the terms of usage."(Adam, Anna, and Helen Mowers. "Start Your Search Engines, Part Two." School Library Journal May (2008): 58-60)

Flickr: Smithsonian Institution's Photostream

"The Smithsonian has created a photostream on the Flickr website with scans of photographs in their collection with no known copyright restrictions. This collection of photos becomes part of the Flickr Commons group and joins the photo collections of other institutions such as The Library of Congress, the Brooklyn Museum and the Powerhouse Museum."(http://www.rrlc.org/orgMain.asp?sid=&orgid=1&storyid=11360)

picsearch.com

"Picsearch connects its users to the vast visual resources of the internet. Picsearch uses its own technology to crawl the web and has created a searchable index of images. When a user sends a query to Picsearch the result is received as a set of thumbnail images that are sorted to ensure that they are as highly relevant as possible. When the user clicks on a thumbnail they are linked to the original web site where that image is located.

Picsearch image search technology has three main features that make it unique. It has a relevancy unrivalled on the web due to its patent-pending indexing algorithms. Also, Picsearch has a family friendliness that allows children to surf in safety as all offensive material is filtered out by our advanced filtering systems. The site is also very user friendly as it's designed to be simple, fast and accurate. Due to all of these features, Picsearch is perfect for fun, school, business and families!"
